The secret spots delivery riders go to eat

When they've finished ferrying takeaways, here's where the city's couriers choose to chow down

If you want to get a real taste of a city’s food culture, it makes sense to talk to the people who visit more restaurants, cafes and takeaways than anyone else. I’m not talking about the broadsheet critics or Instagram influencers with rictus grins; I’m talking about the guys who really have their finger on the pulse of the city: delivery riders.

Their bikes and backpacks plastered in big-tech logos have become part of the tapestry of Glasgow street life over the past decade. Most of them come from far away. But speaking as a former Deliveroo cyclist, there is no better way to get intimately acquainted with a city than by ferrying meals to its residents.

To put my theory to the test, I set out to ask delivery riders in Glasgow for their top restaurant picks. Here’s where they sent me.

“I think a lot of people treat me differently after they hear me speak” — Olive Tree Kitchen, selected by Andy

It sounds like it could be a generic Mediterranean chain restaurant, but don’t let the name fool you; Olive Tree Kitchen is an authentic Hong-Kong style cafe, nestled away in the retro glow of the Savoy Centre, serving up a mixture of traditional Chinese dishes and those more adapted for local palates. My lunch companion, who chose the spot, knows all too well about surfing this dichotomy.
